Doshisha Research Center for East Asian Studies

Outline

The Research Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) was founded in 2009 as one of the Doshisha research centers. CEAS aims to promote the joint research projects which are related to cultural, social, economic and environmental issues in China, South Korea and Japan by means of the field survey and the philosophy of data science. The center also focuses on international exchanges with other research organization, researchers and enterprises in a context of disciplinary fields, based on the educational idea of "internationalism" in Doshisha.

Research Projects

1. Asia Pacific Values Survey
- Cultural Manifold Analysis (CULMAN)on people's sense of trust -

(Project Leader: Prof. Ryozo Yoshino, The Institute of Statistical Mathematics)

The focus of this project is the investigation of the statistical comparison of people's social values and their ways of thinking and feeling: cultural identities and people's attitudes toward economy, freedom of speech, interpersonal relationships, leadership, politics, public acceptance of science and technology, religion, social security, etc. These aspects clarify certain similarities or dissimilarities that are represented by psychological distances between countries in certain statistical analyses of responses. An important problem of our study is to investigate those conditions under which meaningful cross-national comparability of social survey data is guaranteed. As our approach towards this problem over decades, we have been developing the methodologies called CLA (Cultural Linkage Analysis) and CULMAN (Cultural Manifold Analysis).
As the main expected research result, this project aims to clarify people's response patterns on a set of question items in various countries or regions. On the other hand, the response tendencies in specific countries will be explored based on multivariate analysis.

2.An integrated study on the formation mechanism and influence of environmental consciousness in globalization society
(Project Leader: Prof. Yuejun Zheng, Doshisha University)

This study is a disciplinary research project which focuses on the methodological development with emphasis on the following four purposes:
Firstly, we clarify the concept, formation process and structural feature of environmental consciousness (EC) used as the base of people's pro-environmental behavior (PEB) analysis.
Secondly, we explore the main factors which affect people's environmental consciousness in the globalization society by conducting a cross-cultural survey using the sampling technique in China, South Korea and Japan.
Thirdly, we analyze the causal relationship chain from environmental consciousness to pro-environmental behavior using the survey data obtained from three countries with different cultural, political and economic backgrounds.
Finally, we grope the new approach to environmental education for evoking the pro-environmental behavior which is indispensable to the solution of today's global environmental issues.
